This folder is labeled "Schools 1840" and contains: 1. Marblehead, October 14, 1840 to the Selectmen of Marblehead. - Here is my proposal to build a schoohouse on the farm according to your plan 20 by 26 feet on the floors 10 feet stuc I will put in timbers for the floors 8 inch with joist and the rest of the frame 7 inch with joist from raise. Board and claboard the out sides and ends. Shingle the roof with nat pine shingles and extra clapboard. 8 windows 9 by 12 glass with first quality of glass. Seal the inside as high as the windows and plaster remainder . build chimney from the garrot floor through the roof. the roof to pitch - for the sum of three hundred and forty five dollars and have it finished by the middle of November and sooner if possible. Yours, John Cloutman 2. Report of School Committee 1840 - Letter discussing the appropriation of $4000 to be spent by the School committee. The want to maintain competent teaching and a good supply of books. Also primary school should be nine months and not twelve. Suggest that the town restrict the primary school pupils to be 4 years and upwards so it is not like a nursery school. Committee recommends the repairs of the South & Farm Schools. Second letter 1839 basicall stating the same only that primary age should be 6 years and up. 3. At a meeting of the inhabitants of the Town of Marblehead held March 3, 1840 - A resolve that a full account of all purchases and bills be reported to the auditing committee. \ March 16 - Voted that the sum of $3500 be appropriated for the support and encouragement of the Town Schools. Attest Rich Homan, Clerk 4. May 21, 1840 - Letter to the School Committee from James Gregory regarding the hire of the building on the premises to be used as a school room through the then chairman Rev. J. Bartlett. Conditions upon wthich it was offered were accepted - a temporary Back House was to be put up by the Town located on the western side of the U.S. Gun House. Letter goes on to state that this building (privy) was not properly installed and was blown down in a gale. He is ready to build one himself and charge $30 rent for the year for the property. Town must let him know what they want to do. 5. Report of the School Committee re Farm School House and estimates March 30, 1840. Letter lists the reasons for a new school house rather than repairing and adding to the present Farm School house. Estimates are give for a new school at $431.40 and reapir of existing at "$344. It also refers to agreement with the owner of the land where the new school would be built. The School Committee recommends the buiilding of a new school. Wm. Hawkes, Chairman 6. William Goodwin proposal for building school house 1840 - Farm School. His proposal is for $410. 7. Letter to Postmast Marblehead from J. W. Jones a student at Dartmouth College requesting a teaching position in Marblehead. He states that his circumstances compel him to seek employment here as he needs to make the most money. 8. Town of Marblehead School Department for 6 months rent in full ending April 27, 1843 at $35 - $17.50. Sheet irons $1.00 - total $18.50. Rec. for owners J. Sparhawk 9.
