This folder, labeled "Schools," 1806-1807, contains the following: 1. Letter to Issac Mansfield, Clerk of the Schoool Committee Sir, Inconsequence of an advertisement which appeared yesterday in the Boston Gazette dated Marblehead, February 23 for a School Master, I have taken up my pen to inquire wether the situation advertised is permanent, or only for a short term of time. If it should be permanent, I should wish to know the terms, but if not I need no reply. Until then I beg leave to remain your very obedient humble servant Barker. Boston, March 6, 1807 - PS My addres is Mr. George Barker School Master, N4 Hanover Street, Boston. 2. Letter addressed to Gentlemen of the School committee in Marblehead - Mr. Hubbard Reading, March 13, 1807 - Sirs, I would inform you that I will teach your school the coming year for the sum mentioned of four hundred dollars with the liberty of hoping for the other hundred provided I can convince you in the course of the year that I both earn and deserve it. I have the honour to be, Gentlemen, your humble servant Micah Bradley. 3. Salem, February 25, 1807 - Addressed to Issac Mansfield, Esq. - Sir - I should like to be indulged with some particulars regarding the Grammar School which is the subject of an advertisement in a Boston paper as the value of the appointment - number of pupils---. If you will take the trouble to look into the pamphlet for August or September 1805 you will find some featuring notices of me in an account of a charitable institution at St. Christopher, which I contributed to establish. For other inquiries I take the liberty to refer you to my uncle the Hon. W. Higgins of Boston. At present I am the editor of a neutral paper published in the Town I entitled the Friend. I am Sirs, with much consideration your very humble ser--- Stephen C. Blythe 4. The Town of Marblehead to Jordan Renford for Instructing the Youth in the South School for each month April thru December 1805 at $33.33 per month. 5. Gentlemen Selectman to Sarah Doak for keeping the Free School in the months of May thru November 1807 at the rate of two dollars fifty cents per week - $10 or $12 per month depending on number of weeks in month.. 6. Gentlemen Selectmen to Ruth Blaney for keeping the Free School in the months May thru December 1807 at the rate of two dollars fifty cents per week - $10 or $12 per month depending on number of weeks in month.. 7. The Town of Marblehead to Sarah Ross for schooling one month April thru December 1807 - $10 or $12 per month depending on number of weeks in month.. 8. The Town of Marblehead to Hannah Bowen for schooling of children at two dollars 50 cents April thru Decmeber 1807 - $10 or $12 per month depending on number of weeks in month. 9. The Town of Marblehead to Jane Brown for schooling of children from March thru December 1807 at two dollars 50 cents per week. Excepted by one Ashley Bowen for Jane Brown. 10. The Town of Marblehead to Martha Barber at $2/50 per week April thru December 1807 $10 or $12 per month depending on number of weeks in month. 11. The Town of Marblehead to Samuel W. Heath for instructing the Youth at the North School April thru December 1807 at $33.33 per month. March bought a cord of wood for the school - $3.25. Novembe bought a broom $1.20. 12. The Town of Marblehead to Ebenezer Hubbard for my services as instructor of the Center School in said town $37.50 per month for two months 1807. 13, The Town of Marblehead to Jonathan Proctor for instructing the Center School at $33.33 per month May thru November 1807. 14. 1806 The Town of Marblehead to Wm Hooper Reynolds October mending chimeny at North School. 1807 April - days work at South School plus various other chores for a total of $12.23. Paid December 7, 1807 15. January 21, 1807 The Town of Marblehead to Harris Appleton for one armed chair and two other $6.50 plus .15 - total $7.25. Recd. payment 16. 1807 Town of Marblehead to George Barker - April 10 - 3 cord wood delivered to school $19.50. November 5, 3 cords - $24.50, December 19 17 cords $148.75 - total $192.75. Payment Jan. 4, 1808. 17. August the 25, 1807 The Town of Marblehead to Henry Rea for 2 mugs of punch $1.00 - March 3 ditto total $2.00. Delivered the School Committee. March 3, 1808 allowed please to order payment. Joshua Prentis 18. School Committee to Thomas Nicholson March 3, 1807 for Notices and attendance @50 cents each $4.50. 19. To the Selectmen of Marblehead - Gentlemen, Please to order payment of eighty three dollars and thiry cents to Jordan Rexford and charge to the Town. John Prentiss - Chairman Scool Com. Paid May 4, 1807 20. Marblehead January -March 1806 The Town of Marblehead to Martha Barber for schooling at $2 per week. 21. 1806 - the Town of Marblehead to Jane Brown for schooling of children at $2.00 per week December , January and February. 22. 1806 Gentlemen Selecltmen to Sarah Doak for keeping Free School at $2 and fifty cents per week for three weeks. Marblehead May 4, 1807 - $7.50. 23. Gentlemen Selectmen to Ruth Blaney for keeping the Free School December - $10. For keeping Free School at $2.50 per week March - $12.50 24. The Town of Marblehead to Robert Harris from October 1805 to May 4, 1807 for work done at schools - $17.03. Payment June 7, 1807 |
