This folder labeled "School" and undated (contents randing from 1820 through 1850) contains the following: 1. Payment to Eliza Gregory, $30.50, for instructing in a primary school. 2. Payment to Simeon Dodge & Son, $.75 cents for repairing privy door at School Street School, approved by Daniel Appleton, Secretary of School Committee. 3. Request for payment to J.H. Coggeshall for teaching iat Farm School. 4. Invoice for books (extremely fragile paper, unable to unfold and read). 5. Request to James Batchelder, Secretary, and Rev. John Bartlett, Chair, School Committee, to deliver to William Fabens an amount payable on account of Charles Edwards for instruction at high school, signed by A.C. Orne. 6. Payment to Charles W. Woodbury, $1.50 for services as teacher at grammar school, January 1, 1820. 7. Payment to C.B. Dearborn, $112.50 for services as teacher from January 1 to April 1, 1833. 8. Calculations for payment to Brown, Williams & (?) for unspecified service at Farm School. 9. Payment to Samuel Avery, $6.92 for books. 10. Payment to James Eastland, $1.25 for sawing 2-1/2 cords of wood for Center School. 12. Payment to Hannah Valentine, $10 for "instruction of youth" for one month, paid August 2, 1830. 13. Note regarding the used of certain books in public schools (illegible as to specifics). 14. One half of a note requesting payment for advertising.in the Marblehead Gazette(?). 15. Payment to William Goodwin, $4.96 for material and carpentry work at Farm School. 16. Payment to Thomas P. Field, $200 for services in High School, one quarter, November to February. 17. Payment to Michael Coombs, $114.50 for instructing at South School for 3 months, ending January 1, 1836. 18. Vote of School Committee to refuse enrollment of children from Salem to Farm School and to dismiss any already enrolled, contrary to any former agreement with Salem. Signed on the back by John Dixey of Marblehead. 19. Vote by the Selectmen authorizing a new school house to be built. 20. Request from the inhabitants of Marblehead to the Selectmen to call a meeting of the inhabitants to determine what number of primary shools they will authorize, if any, for the coming season. Signed by William Reed, Samuel Dana, John Gregory and Joseph Cloutman. 21. A report from the School Committee describing the condition of various schools -- primary, Elm Street, Middle Street, the female high school, male high school, Farm School -- throughout the town and where additional teachers are necessary. 22. Note from John Prince to Isaac Mansfield, clerk of the School Committee, introducing a person as a prospective teacher, the writer having conversed with Master Snellings of the Center School who speaks highly of him. 23. School Committee report to the Town of Marblehead, signed by Nathan Bowen, reporting that the public school is insufficient for proper education, that there is an unequal disadvantage to some families forced to pay for private schooling, that women taking it upon themselves to teach young children to read without the necessary skills to do so is injurious to children, that persons be appointed to manage the affairs of schools, and that trustees visit the schools to inspect that suitable sums of money are appropriated and report annually on the state of schools. 24. Proposal from William Goodwin to build a school house on plot of ground on Back Street, according to plans and specifications, for $2,156. 40.
