This folder, labeled "School," 1810 through 1819, contains the following: 1. School regulations "to be observed by the Scholars at the South School." Paraphrasing: Article 1: no whispering or speaking to another scholar without permission and no leaving his or her seat except to go to the desk. Article 2: liberty to leave for 10 minutes only unless otherwise requested; Article 3: laughing, grimaces or uncouth gestures will be punished accordingly; Article 4: not arriving 20 minutes before the school opening will be punished accordingly; Article 5: no writing of obscene language on benches or walls or defacing by cutting with a knife or otherwise; Article 6: shall observe decency and order while going to and from school, no name calling, except Christian or surnames, no profane or immodest language or uncouth noises. Anyone who willfully or knowingly transgresses all or any aforesaid rules will be punished according to the nature and aggravation of the crime. Dated: Marblehead, June 1810. 2. Letter to Joseph H. White from Barnard Tucker, dated Newburyport, May 28, 1810, accepting proposed teaching salary, advising of planned arrival in town to start school on the 1st Monday in June and requesting a suitable place to board proportionate to his income, "one mile distant." 3. Communication by Isaac Story, Chairman, to Fredeick Knight regarding Knight's introduction to the school as grammar master at the Centre School with a note "To the Scholars" that they must accept Knight as their master and observe "cheerful obedience" to him. Dated: Marblehead, May 20, 1811. 4. Petition to the Selectmen, dated May 12, 1817, requesting that the town consider building a new school house to accommodate the many students who, because of distance of travel and income, were unable to attend either of the public schools. Vote at Town meeting to appoint a committee of three people to examine the merits of a petition by the inhabitants of the "Farms" to have a new school in that area. Voted: Richard Prince, Nathan B. Martin and John Sparhawk, April 11, 1816, and attested to by Joshua Prentiss. Attached order by the appointed committee, signed by Richard Prince, Chairman, that the petition be allowed, that petitioners are "entitled to their proportionate monies asssed as the school tax in ordrer to accommodate them with a school," dated April 18, 1816. 6. Petition submitted to Samuel W. Heath, March 18, 1811, begging to make known his and his family's "melancholly situation," finding his annual teacher's salary of $400 "altogether inadequate" as he has had to borrow and receive credit from others, and thus being so "perplexed, harrassed and distressed that he is unable to pay proper attention to his school and family, and so requesting assistance to make his school "flourishing as any school whatsoever." 7. Order of the School Committee, signed by Isaac Story, Chairman, May 2, 1817, denying a petition for a new school house because of the present "low state of the finances of the town." 8. Resignation of Benjamin Greenleaf, dated February 1, 1810, from "the station they have placed me in on the first day of May next."
