Newspaper article "104 Pupils In Room, Only One Teacher, Frail One Suffered" by Frank L. Bessom. This aeticle has Chapter II in his series on Marblehead Schools. This article talks about Marblehead Intermediate and Primary schools and the large number of students and has a photograph of the Orne Primary school. Their were four Intermediate schools in th 1870's. Barnard Intermediate with Miss Lucretia S. Ireson in charge, the Holyoke Intermediate in the South Church with Miss Mary Hamson in charge, the Sewall Intermediate with Miss Harriet Newhall in charge and the Mugford Intermediate, at present Gerry School site, with Miss Amy K. Prentiss in charge. Marblehead had ten primary schools. The Orne Primary with Miss Marcia A. Selman in charge, the Glover Primary, in Glover Square, with Miss. L. H. Bateman in charge, the Merchant Primary, on Rowland Street, with Miss Harriet L. Shirley as teacher, the Mugford Primary, in the same building as the Mugford Intermediate, with Miss Harriet E. Osgood in charge, the Lee Primary, at Lee & Gregory Streets, with teachers, Misses Mary E. Homan, Marcia M. Selman, and Lizzie Bray, the Sewall Primary taught by Miss Hannah Goodwin, the Tucker Primary, on Barnard Street, with Miss R. T. Goodwin as teacher, the Washington Primary, located in the Barnard school house, taught by Miss Mary E. Brown, the Cowell Primary, on Cottage Street, with Miss K. E. Corner teacher and the Barnard Primary with Miss S. E. Hammond teacher The article is from a scrapbook that contains articles from newspapers starting in around 1870 and continuing to 1910. The articles range from serialized stories, poems, birth death and marriage notices, historical and political articles. The scrapbook was started in Lynn and moves to Marblehead. |
