This file contains 10 papers concerning the removal of "Methodist Rocks" and making away laid out from Pleasant Street to Washington St. now named Rockaway Street.
There are five petitions from concerned citizens on the subject of improving a way from Pleasant St to Washington Street over the way called "Methodist Rocks. It was apparently so named as it was a ledge of stone that lead to the Methodist Church on Summer Street. These petitions were dated; 1840 with 27 signatures; 1845 with 26 signatures ; 1850 with 24 signatures : 1851 with 11 signatures and : 1853 with 16 signatures.
On January 19, 1861 The Selectmen sent a letter to the Essex County Commissioners about the situation and requested their help.
On Nov. 18, 1861 there is a receipt of $200.00 "from the County Treasurer on Acct. Methodist Rocks to the Selectmen.
On June 4th 1862 Saml. Clough sent a letter to the Selectmen on the damage to his shop and land removed from his property for the revised way when the Methodist Rocks were removed.
On June 2, 1862 Philip Bessom sent a letter to the Selectmen about the damage done to the property of the estate of Elisabeth Bessemand by the work done on the public road called "Rockaway Street"
On January 27, 1862 the Trustees of M. R. Society sent to the Selectmen a list of damages done by the removal of the Rocks.
