This file contains several original and " true copies" of papers concerned with the start of the American Revolution and some of the things that lead up to it. Listed in chronological order. 1. April 20 1775 A Town warrant for a Marblehead Town Meeting on 20 April 1775 "to chose a committee to confer with the several Committees of the Seaport Towns of this County and what steps shall then be thought most Expedient for them to take" etc. Signed by J. Mugford, Stephen Phillips, John Gerry, and Edward Fettyplace. 2. April 21,1775 The results of a Town Meeting on 21 April 1775 with Deacon Stephen Phillips as moderator chose Mr. Joshua Orne, Capt. Johnathan Glover, and Mr. Thomas Gerry to be this committee. 3. April 28, 1775 A note by John Pedrick recanting his part in a letter to Governor Hutchinson. 4. May 3, 1770 A petition to the Selectmen to hold a Town Meeting at which the merchants would agree to not import British goods especially green & black tea. Signed by 12 local merchants.- Izor Orne, Jeremiah Lee, Henry Tudor, Thomas Gerry, Joshua Orne, Richard Harris, J.L. Mugford, Sam Levitt, William Courtis, T. Fettyplace, Eben Stacey, T. Homan 5. May 1, 3 & 5, 1775 A page of reports of various meetings and the results of those meetings. Committee for consideration of seasonal vacanations - Caleb Gibbs, John Glover, Jonathan Glover, Jock Smith William Lee. 6. May 3, 1775 Three letters from three men of Marblehead who also recanted their part in the letter to Governor Hutchinson. They were George McCall, Richard Reed, & Henry Landery. 7. May 3, 1775 A report of the retractions of Marblehead men to the Committee of Safety in Cambridge. 8. May 4, 1775 A message from the Committee of Safety in Cambridge accepting the above recantations of Robert Hooper, John Pedrick, Robert Hooper, Jr., George McCall, Richard Reed, and Henry Landers. 9. May 6, 1775 A report of a meeting of the Town of Marblehead with a large X across the face of it - Voted the inhabitants will be at the Expense of further fortifying this Town in the best mannyer they can. March 1779 An invoice to the Town of Marblehead from Peter Jayne for the use of his house from March 1778 to March 1779 for the sum of 50 pounds. 12. June 7,1813 Two invoice from Thomas Grant for attending meetings of the Committee of Safety, one for $2.00 the other for $3.00. 13. May 20, 1774 Letteer from the town of Newport sent to each town in the Colony regarding the closing of the port of Boston. Voted that we will unite with other to procure the rights of the colonies and put a stop to trade to Great Britain. and the West Indies. |
