The state legislature passed a law in 1843 requiring corporations to send a list of stockholders residing in the town to the assessors of each town together with the number of shares and the value. This act was titled, "An Act for the More Equal Assessment of Taxes." For alist of companies in this file see Notes. This file contains165 notices from various corporations to the assessors of Marblehead, listing the names and quantities of shares of stock held in the years 1860, 1861 and 1862. As these papers were collected over a period of 10 years and were stored in various unknown buildings and places were retrieved and sorted by volunteers in 1965 (about 100 years or more after they were made) and remained apparently undisturbed since then the papers we have are in good condition. However some have been water damaged. |
