This folder, labeled "Schools," 1760-1769, contains: 1. Application to the Selectmen, dated September 2, 1767, signed by William Bowen, John Chipman, Nathan Bowen and Robert Hooper, citing the present crowding in public schools and asking that sufficient space be considered by the board. 2. Order by the Selectmen to the constables of Marblehead to give notice to the freeholders and other inhabitants to assemble and convene at the Town House on October 12, 1767, to receive the resignation of the trustees of the schools who have resigned and to provide a proper place for the keeping of the grammar school, signed by Richard Reed, Benjamin Marston and Benjamin Boden, Selectmen, with confirmation by Constable Benjamin Eaton that the warrant was posted. 3. Report by the Selectmen regarding their inquiry into the state of the schools, dated May 18, 1767, and signed by Robert Hooper, William Bowen, Nathan Bowen and Jeremiah Lee. 4. Parchment paper entitled, "Expence for Schools in Marblehead," dated March 21, 1768, and signed by George Newmarch, John Picket, John Pedrick and Thomas Lewis, committee members. 5. Account of payments by order of the trustees of the schools in Marblehead to Isaac Mansfield, town treasurer, March 21,1768. 6. Report on the "Expence on the Schools," from June to September 30, 1767, signed by Nathan Bowen on October 1, 1767. 7. Letter to the Selectmen from Issac Mansfield, dated September 28, 1767, informing them that since he is being dismissed from service at the "end of the month," and is going out of town for some days, he is delivering the keys to the Town House where the Grammar School has been kept. 8. Letter of resignation, dated September 8, 1767, by membes of the School Committee to the Selectmen because of insufficent rooms being provided, thereby preventing them from discharging their duties. Signed by Robert Hooper, William Bowen, Jeremiah Lee, John Chipman and Nathan Bowen. 9. Warrent to convene the town, served on inhabitants by Constable Benjamin Eaton on September 3, 1767, regarding the funding of additional public schools. Signed by Isaac Mansfield, Richard Reed, Benjamin Marston, Azor Orne, Selectmen. 10. Petition by John Everton to the Selectmen, dated April 5, 1762, being incapacitated by injury at sea, seeking permission to keep a school, teaching arithmetic and navigation for his livelihood. Petition approved by the town on April 5, 1762, and signed by Benjamin Boden. 11. Acceptance of payments to Issac Mansfield by Order of the Trustees of School, dated March 13, 1769, including payments to: Joseh Ward, Peter Jayne, Joshua Prentice, Edmund Freeman, Samuel Ashton, Samuel Philips, Sarah Bigsby, Joseph Picket, Stephen Philips, William Doliber. 12. Warrant for notice to be given by constables to freeholders and inhabitants of Marblehed to convene at the Town House for decisions regarding the state of schools in the town, signed by Benjamin Boden, Samuel Gatchel, John, John Pedrick and John Picket, Selectmen. Notice posted by John Wormsted, Constable, on March 28, 1768. |
