Scope & Content/Description |
This folder is labeled "Schools 1876-1877" and contains: 1. To the Honorable Board of Seletmen Gentlemen - the undersigned citizens, legal voters of the Town of Marblehead respectfully represent, that at a town meeting held December 27, 1875, it was voted that the sum of $20,000 be appropriated to erect a brick school house for the Boys Grammar School, and it was also voted that the town Treasurer be authorized to have $20,000 in anticipation of the taxes, and it was further voted that the School Committee be the committee to build the said school house. The undersigned believe that said votes are defective, if not illegal, and that the sum appropriated is excessive in the present condition of the finances of the town, and respectfully petition your honorable board to call a Town meeting to recind the above votes. And they further petition to insert an article to see if the Town will appropriate a sum not exceeding $10,000 to erect a school house, to choose a committee to select and purchase a site and to build said school. To see if the Town will authorize the Town Treasurer to have the amount appropriated in anticipation of the taxes, and amount to be assessed upon the folkes and estates of the Town the present year.
