Knight House on Franklin Street, more than 100 years old, was bought by William R. Knight in 1859. It was later the Mary Alley Hospital which was bequeathed to the town in 1904 by Mary Alley, a teacher, to provide a facility for injured Marbleheaders. She was known for her generosity and philanthropy toward the sick and less fortunate.. She was a co-founder of the Marblehead Visiting Nurse Association, active in the Soldiers' Aid during the Civil War and served on the board of the Marblehead Female Humane Society. The hospital served the town until approx. 1954 when the new Mary Alley hospital was completed. |
