The state legislature passed a law in 1843 requiring corporations to send a list of stock holders to the assessors of each town residing in the town together with the number of shares and their value. This act was titled, "An Act for the more equal Assessment of Taxes." For list of Companies in this file see Notes. This file contains 56 notices from various corporations to the assessors of Marblehead listing the names and quantities of shares of stocks with the corporations and the years. As these papers were collected over a period of 10 years and were stored in various unknown buildings and places were retrieved and sorted by volunteers in 1965 (about 100 years or more after they were made) and remained apparently undisturbed since then the papers we have are in good condition. However some have been water damaged. |
