A brown album titled "Glover Notes." A photo of General John Glover is on the cover. There are 53 pages with many various articles about General Glover and also newspaper clippings and handwritten notes by the author, Mr. Iarrobino, pertaining to his research and records of Gen. Glover and the USS Glover. Page 3 is a clipping from the Reporter, July 1967, regarding the USS Glover Committee. They are sponsoring a decal sale in order to raise $2500.00 for gifts from the town of Marblehead to the Naval research vessel now in Boston undergoing renovations. Wayne T. Butler, committee member and treasurer, announced a special gifts campaign has also been launched aimed at reaching local civic and fraternal organizations. Page 4 is a pencil sketch by John Trumbull of Brig. General Glover. More notes on pages 5,6and 7. Newspaper article regarding a Search for 'Headers related to General Glover on page 8. Three more pages of newspaper articles - Marblehead to Honor Gen. Glover in the Boston Globe and Lynn Item articles naming the USS Glover ship of the month by the Navy. Four pages of photos of Gen. Glover follow. A portrait of Marblehead's War hero, Gen. Glover, was placed in the custody of Anthony Athanas of the General Glover House by Mr. Iarrobino. It was open for public viewing until Oct. 1, 1967. The portrait, along with a sterling silver set and electric organ, will be presented by the Town of Marblehead to Marblehead's adopted ship, the USS Glover at the Boston Naval Shipyard. A unique relationship tells the story of the town and USN highlighted at the Silver Service Presentation Ceremony on Oct. 21, 1967. Photo of Selectman James Skinner and Gov. Sargent on page 38. Mostly articles and photos follow, up to the USS Glover's Visit to Marblehead 1-5 July 1968. The decommissioning of USS Glover was a loss for both the Navy and the town. An article in the Marblehead Reporter on July 5, 1990 tells the story of the ties with the USN. A photo of Joan von Sternberg, administrative assistant for the Board of Selectmen, bears one of the gifts, a steel sword donated by Glover's Regiment. The artifacts and other memorabilia will be displayed at Abbot Hall as part of its historical collection. The sterling silver tray tells the story of the man the USS Glover was named for, Brigadier Gen. John Glover. "Marblehead's eternal pride in Gen. Glover, never in doubt anyway, will become stronger than ever." |
