Rec Pay by Town Order, Samuel Goodwin 10. Danvers, June 6, 1840, letter to the Gentlemen Overseers of the Poor of Marblehead. We hereby notify you that Jonathan Ashby and wife with two children have become changeable to this Town by reason of sickness and have applied to us for Assistances which we have rendered and charged same to your Town and shall eviction us to do the same until you remove them or otherwise provide for them which you have requested to do. J. Ashby was formerly an inhabitant of Salem but we understand he has since been in possession of Real Estate in Marblehead by a former wife, which brings his Settlement in your Town. Gentlemen, Mary Knaff an acknowledged pauper of your town has again called for assistance which we have granted her and shall continue us to do until she is removed or other ways provide for, as she is more the proper charge of your town. Gentlemen, Abraham Caswell, who has a legal settlement in the Town of Marblehead has become chargeable to the town of Beverly and is now in the Poor House there. We shall charge his board to the Town of Marblehead from the 15th instant and request you to cause his removal - Said Saraham's father and paternal grandfather are named Simon - his father was born in Marblehead and since leaving there, has resided for a long period in Wenham, say 30 or 40 years, but did not acquired settlement in Wenham - for a short time past Simon, the father with his family, have resided in this town and are in destitute circumstances, but have not had any relief from the Town as paupers, although from the statement of the wife of Simon it appears probable that they will not get through another winter without help. To the Overseers of the Poor of the Town of Marblehead. Gentlemen, Hannah Dunson an acknowledged pauper whose legal settlement is in your town, but now residing in this City, being in needy circumstances, has applied to this Board for relief, which we have granted and charged to your Town, and shall continue so to do, until you remove or otherwise provide for her support. Gentlemen, We have lately caused the body of Caroline Hammond to be buried, and have charged the expense $4.50 to your town. Said Caroline, was a daughter of the late Capt. Mary Nothey, an acknowledged pauper of your town is now in this town and need of assistance. We have furnished her relief and shall continue so to do until she is removed or other ways provided for, at the expense of the town of Marblehead. Sarah Hooper, acknowledged pauper whose legal settlement is in your town but now residing in this City, being in needy circumstances, have applied to this Board for relief, which we have granted, and charged to your Town, and shall continue so to do, until you remove or otherwise provide for this support. Snow, having a lawful settlement in the Town of Marblehead has been committed to the House of Correction within this City, by due course of law, for the term of 2 months under the 143d Chapter of the Revised Statutes. Office of Overseers of House of Correction, County of Suffolk, City Hall, Boston, August 31, 1840 to Overseers of the Poor of the Town of Marblehead. Annexed you have an account of expenses, incurred by the City of Boston for the support in the House of Correction of Nancy Pierce and James Russell for the amount of this account, demand is now made. Gentlemen, I left the Alms House last week and have remaining there a few articles of clothing and a few articles of household furniture which I wish to recover. To the Gentlemen Overseers of the Town of Marblehead from the city of Lynn, May 18, 1840. Mrs. Nape, a pauper of your town, has again applied to us for further assistance. We have assisted her to the amount of one dollar, she has of late been confined, more assistance will probable be needed, we shall aid her till otherwise ordered by your board. Williston, all acknowledged inhabitants of your town, have again become chargeable to this City (Salem) as paupers we have furnished them all with a little wood, as heretofore in winter, and Mrs. Williston, additional aid of a few necessaries, she being unable to labor, all of which we have charged your Town and shall continue to supply the wants of all the above named persons, until you otherwise provide for them. I am under the painful necessety of sending to you for to ask the favour for a little assistance to help me this winter. I have one child that is not able to get his twin and my health is so poor that I am not able to be exposed in cold weather, but can get along in the summer. My husband has left me with no support 2 years this month. If you will please to help me a little you will do me a great favour. Signed Mary Burns 24. Usual Allowance. In behalf of the Oveseers of the City of Boston 25. Office of the Overseers of the Poor, Mansfield, May 2, 1840 to the Overseers of the Poor of the Town of Marblehead. Eunice Hovey, whose legal settlement is in your Town but now resides in Mansfield. Being in needy circulmsances have applied to us for relief which we have granted and charged to your town and shall continue so to do until you remove or otherwise provide for her support. Eunice Hovey is the wife or widow of Stephen Hovey and holds his settlelment from his father,Thomas Hovey which I understand is in your Town 26. The Office of Navy Agents, Boston, August 1840. Please inform me whether you can furnish twelve thousand pounds of oakum at the Charlestown Navy Yard in what time and at what price? The oakum must be of the first quality and pass the inspectors of the yards and will be paid for on delivery. If you cannot furnish the entire quantity, please say how much you can supply. For rations to James Snow from Jan 1 to March 9, ten weeks one dollar per week for $10.00, widow Snow 35 weeks, one dollar per week for $35.00, Mrs. Green in April 5 weeks for $5.00, Mrs. Green in May for 3 weeks for $3.00, Mrs. Griffin in July for 9 weeks for $9.00, Dec. 6 for 2 lbs of tea for Poor House at $1.50 and 42 lbs of sugar for $4.20 for a total of $67.70 29. Town of Marblehead to J. H. Brown, 1839. For horse and chaise to Salem forself and Hathaway $1.25, 1/2 days services $.75 and 290 pounds of beef $16.80 for a total of $18.50. 30. Town of Marblehead to J. H. Brown, 1840. For express to Brighton for Brown and Hathaway $1.44 and driving cattle to & from Brighton $3.88 for a total of $5.32. 31. Letter from New Bedford dated July 17, 1840 to the Marblehead Overseers of the Poor stating that they are supporting the Joseph Newhall, son of Philip Newhall and will supply him with medicines at the expense of your town. His condition seems caused by strong drink. 32. Letter from New Bedford dated July 25, 1840 to the Marblehead Overseers of the Poor stating that they have Jonas Newhall, real name Joseph Newhall, in their Alms House very sick, delerious and to human appearance will soon make his last remove to the world of spirits. They will provide notice of his decease. 33. Town of Marblehead to J. H. Brown,1840. For horse and chaise service to Brighton, Salem, Lynn and Ipswich including services for those trips, delivery of pump, box and fixtures and delivery of 264 feet of plank for a total of $42.52. 34. Letter from Herry Bacon to the Marblehead Overseers of the Poor dated June 6, 1840. He requests to be able to preach at the Poor House like he has been able to do in Cambridge and Haverhill. 35. Letter from Herry Bacon to the Marblehead Overseers of the Poor dated June 15, 1840. He states he does not believe a decision has been made regarding his preaching at the Poor House if he is required to search out anyone who might be opposed. 36. Letter from Mr. Goodwin of Lynn to the Marblehead Overseers of the Poor dated Oct. 20, 1840 stating he has had no wood since May and requesting they write to Mr. Newhall to provide him with wood. 37. Bill from the City of Boston to the Town of Marblehead dated Oct. 25, 1841 requesting payment of $71.76 for cash and wood provided to the following people from Marblehead, Hannah Dunson, Hannah Girdler, Mary Anderton, Hannah Follett, Sarah Hooker, Sarah Bowden, Harriet Freeman and Harriet Williams. |
