This file contains papers from the assessors of Marblehead for the years 1870 to 1879 as follows: 1. Booklet entitled "Tax Doc......No. 2., 1871," listing companies in Massachusetts subject to taxation under the Corporation Tax Act. Marblehead and Lynn Railroad Company as well as Marblehead Gas Light Company. 2. Notice from the Tax Commissioner of Massachusetts, Daniel A. Gleason, Deputy Tax Commissioner, dated November 26, 1877, notifying the assessors of Marblehead of taxes due in the amount of $1,369.91. 3. Notice from Massachusetts Tax Commissioner's Office, Daniel A. Gleason, Deputy Tax Commissioner, dated November 26, 1877, notifying Marblehead of taxes due in the amount of $1,905.42. 4. Notice to the assessors of the Town of Marblehead of its requirement to assess the sum of $3,829.84 on the town, dated May 10, 1880, by Alfred A. Abbott, Clerk. Witnessed by Joseph O. Procter, Esquire, Salem. 5. Warrant, Commonwealth of Massachusetts to the assessors of Marblehead ordering it to assess the amount of $3,502.40 payable in taxes, dated the second Tuesday of April 1871, by by A. Abbott, Clerk. Witnessed by James Kimball. 6. Warrant for state taxes due for the year 1871 in the amount of 6,950, addressed to the assessors of Marblehead and dated May 27, 1871, by Samuel Adams, Treasurer. 7. Warrant addressed to the assessors of Marblehead ordering that the sum of $45,000 be raised to defray expenses of the current year, dated May 1, 1871, by W.B. Brown, Treasurer. 8. Notice from the Commonwealth Tax Commissioner's Office to the assessors of Marblehead, dated June 24, 1871, offering suggestions for the performance of duties under the Tax Act, by Daniel A. Gleason, Deputy Tax Commissioner. 9. Certification submitted by Benjamin W. Hammond to the assessors of the Town of Marblehead notifying the town of his real estate and personal taxable property and his income exceeding $2,000 per year. As these papers were collected over a period of 10 years and were stored in various unknown buildings and places were retrieved and sorted by volunteers in 1965 (about 100 years or more after they were made) and remained apparently undisturbed since then the papers we have are in good condition. |
