Willard expressing his surprise to such a move and to the possible damage that may or may not have been done to the painting…the above articles were printed in the messenger between June 15-22, 1906…

51ABBOT HALL LIBRARY CLOSES DOORS AFTER 77 YEARS OF LOCAL SERVICE, opened December 1877, Miss Anna B. Cole was head librarian, mover to new building on the corner of Pleasant and Maverick Streets, ABBOT HALL GETS PAT ON BACK FROM VISITOR, ABBOT HALL, an article mentioning the historic articles that are there "SPIRIT OF '76". In April, 1889, General John H. Devereux of Cleveland, Ohio, asked to present the town of Marblehead with Willard's historic picture of Yankee Doodle and further asked that it be "erected" in Abbot Hall in memory of the brave men of Marblehead who have died in battle on sea and land for their country.
